What is PFAS and how does it affect health?

In the US, many states refer to PFAS as a substance that requires special attention:

  • In New York State, PFAS and Phthalates are on the list of substances that are proposed to be restricted in packaging.
  • The State of California prioritizes products that choose to treat substances containing PFAS for use on fabric or leather.
  • Washington State authorized the Washington State Department of Ecology to accelerate regulation of priority products containing PFAS in the Safer Products for Washington program.

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of many thousands of possible substances used to enhance the performance of products like textiles, cooking pans, cosmetics, and paint.

These fluorine-containing chemicals are incredibly stable due to strong chemical bonds between the carbon and multiple fluorine atoms. This stability offers interesting chemical properties such as excellent water and soiling repellence. However, this stable chemical structure means that they do not easily degrade and will persist in the environment.

PFAS are in the spotlight because of their bio-accumulative behavior and associated health concerns causing cancer, kidney disease, thyroid disease, increasing blood cholesterol, affecting the immune system, and causing low birth weight in babies.
