Why test rice?

  • For consumers: Rice is an important agricultural commodity, providing more than 20% of the total daily energy intake of humans. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure that the rice produced on the market is a clean source of raw materials and does not contain harmful chemicals in the production process to protect the health and safety of consumers.
  • For rice businesses and production establishments: The inspection of rice testing criteria is a mandatory procedure to control the quality of rice as well as announce the quality of rice that meets the eligibility criteria. to bring to market. In other words, rice testing is a way for rice businesses and production establishments to operate and maintain operations in accordance with the provisions of Circular 19/2012/TT-BYT of the Ministry of Health issued on September 9th. Rice testing criteria according to current standards

To be able to export or publish rice testing criteria, an enterprise operating in Vietnam needs to meet some product quality requirements specified in TCVN 11888: 2017 replacing TCVN 5644. :2008 because there is currently no QCVN on rice.

These quality standards are based on:

  • Circular No. 27/2012/TT-BYT of the Minister of Health guiding the management of food additives
  • Circular No. 08/2015/TT-BYT of the Minister of Health supplementing a number of regulations to Circular No. 27/2012/TT-BYT
  • Circular No. 50/2016/TT-BYT of the Minister of Health regulating the maximum limit of pesticide residues in food
  • QCVN 8-2:2011/BYT National technical regulation with limits of heavy metal contamination in food
  • QCVN 8-1:2011/BYT National technical regulation with limits of mycotoxin contamination

Accordingly, in order to meet the quality requirements, rice products need to meet the standards including: organoleptic requirements, physico-chemical criteria, food hygiene and safety requirements.

Sensory requirements in rice testing costs:

This requirement is assessed through the color, taste and amount of impurities present in the finished rice. Specifically:

Free from foreign impurities and insects

In addition, in terms of sensory factors, there are also indicators determined as follows:

  • Determination of moisture content in rice according to ISO 712
  • Determination of milling degree of rice grain

Analysis of nutritional composition ( Starch, Sugar, fat, glucide, fiber ...)

Analysis of vitamins (B1, B7, B9, B12...)

These indicators will be regulated according to the current QCVN and based on rice samples.

The criteria on the level of safety in the rice testing criteria:

Because there is no separate QCVN for rice, the criteria for the maximum standard of pesticide residues in rice are specified in: QCVN 8-2:2011/BYT national technical regulation with metal pollution limits heavy in food

Two QCVN 8-2:2011/BYT and QCVN 8-1:2011/BYT will regulate the maximum amount of heavy metals, and mycotoxins in food also apply to rice

In addition, there are additional regulations on heavy metals and mycotoxins according to TCVN 11888: 2017  for rice as specified in the table below:
