Approaching potential partners in exporting agricultural products to the UK market
Vietnamese agricultural exporters who want to establish long-term relations with the UK market need to have an appropriate strategy and increase access to potential partners.
Have an appropriate strategy and increase access to potential partners.
The UK is the country with the second-largest economy in Europe, has a free trade policy, and a large demand for agricultural products, this is a very competitive market for exporters. Therefore, Vietnamese enterprises exporting agricultural products that want to establish long-term relations with the UK market need to have an appropriate strategy, increase access to potential partners to take advantage of export opportunities to these important markets.
That's what Mr. Nguyen Canh Cuong - Vietnam Trade Counselor in the UK spoke at a webinar workshop on exporting agricultural products to the UK market organized by the Vietnam Trade Office in the UK and the Trade Promotion Agency (Ministry of Industry and Trade), held on September 3, 2021, with the participation of more than 100 delegates representing agencies, organizations, and enterprises exporting Vietnamese agricultural products.
According to Mr. Nguyen Canh Cuong, the Vietnam-UK Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA) signed by the two governments in time at the end of 2020 has helped many Vietnamese agricultural products have competitive advantages in the market. UK market compared to similar products originating from countries that do not have a free trade agreement (FTA) with the UK. Meanwhile, the need to find suppliers outside the European Union (EU) after Brexit, has made the two sides have the opportunity to cooperate. Every year, British businesses import a large number of vegetables and agricultural products to meet the market's consumption demand.

Mr. Nguyen Canh Cuong said that Vietnamese businesses can only take advantage of market opportunities when their products meet quality requirements and are in line with British consumer tastes. "Enterprises should practice production according to GlobalG.A.P because this is one of the prerequisites for Vietnamese agricultural products to access high-end markets," as recommended by Mr. Nguyen Canh Cuong.
Agreeing with the above statement, Mr. Nguyen Huy - representative of Eurofins Assurance Vietnam Group, and Dr. Han Van Hanh (Glasgow University) also said that GlobalG.AP will help Vietnamese businesses develop sustainably and reach out to the great sea.
Assessing the UK market, Mr. John Gavin - Director of the Southeast Asia Trade Support Organization in the UK said that the UK is the country with the second-largest economy in Europe, has a free trade policy and has a strong economy. demand for imported agricultural products is large. However, the market is very competitive with imported goods from many countries. Vietnamese businesses have opportunities in the UK market but must have appropriate strategies to establish long-term customer relationships. Moreover, for products that have potential and are quite new to British consumers such as tea, spices, fruits, and eco-friendly straws such as bamboo straws, grass straws, etc. With straws made of wood, straws made from rice, Vietnamese businesses need to build trust in UK buyers before they can sell their products.
Currently, many businesses have successfully approached the UK market, but according to Ms. Nguyen Thu Thuy - Deputy Director of the Export Support Center (Department of Trade Promotion), there are still many businesses that have not been successful despite the lack of success, despite having a good product. Therefore, Vietnamese enterprises need to increase their access to potential partners to take advantage of opportunities to export to this important market.
From the UK market, Ms. Anh Dao Carrick - General Secretary of the Vietnamese Association in the UK emphasized that the Vietnamese community in the UK will give priority to using Vietnamese products when going to the supermarket. Ms. Anh Dao Carrick also expressed her willingness to support Vietnamese businesses in market research, consulting on marketing strategies and accessing to UK market.
Various trade connection activities
In order to support Vietnamese enterprises to export agricultural products to this market, the Vietnam Trade Office in the UK has made efforts and organized various trade connection activities.
Recently, on July 15, 2021, the Trade Office successfully organized a seminar and online trading of agricultural products for Vietnamese exporters to approach a number of UK importers. As a result of the seminar, a number of Vietnamese businesses are having the opportunity to export vegetables and fruits to the Birmingham wholesale market - one of the UK's largest fruit and vegetable wholesale centers. Some UK import companies also plan to import dried fruits, cashew nuts, and dried coconut jam from Vietnam. In addition, the Vietnam Trade Office in the UK is also preparing to hold another seminar on agricultural trade on September 28, 2021, in London with the main guests being purchasing managers of large supermarket chains and supermarkets companies importing agricultural products in the UK.
The Vietnam Trade Office in the UK expects that reputable Vietnamese exporters will participate in this workshop to bring high-quality Vietnamese agricultural products to major supermarkets in the UK. Therefore, businesses can send samples and promotional materials to the Trade Office to display at this event.
