EU update on pesticide residues in food August 2022
On 22/07/2022 EU updated regulations on the maximum limit of pesticide residues in some foods, valid from 18/08/2022
On 22/07/2022 EU updated regulations on the maximum limit of pesticide residues in some types of foods.
Specifically, regulation (EU)2022/1290 was issued addressing the MRL amendments for the active ingredients ametoctradine, chlormequat, dodine, nicotine, profenofos and Spodoptera exigua multicapsid nucleopolyhedrovirus (SeMNPV) isolate BV-0004 in food.
The content of the change has some key points to note as follows:
- Regulation of MRL threshold for ametoctradin active ingredient in honey products, according to which the EU allows the threshold of this active ingredient to be higher than the old EU regulation 2021/1110 from 0.05 mg/kg to 5 mg/kg.
- Dodine is approved for use in citrus fruits with an MRL of 1,5 mg/kg. Previously, according to Reg. (EU) 2016/1002 dodine is not allowed in citrus fruits and defaults to 0,01 mg/kg.
- Some active ingredients continue to be subject to temporary MRL limits as the data collected shows that these substances are still highly detectable in certain fruits and vegetables. Scientists have not provided conclusive evidence that they occur in nature or not and how long they remain in the product. In there:
- Chlormequat: continue to establish interim MRL for one year until 25/07/2023 set level 0,9 mg/kg. Similarly, a provisional MRL has been established for pears through July 25, 2019 at 0,07 mg/kg.
- Nicotine: The interim MRL was established under regulation (EU) 2017/978 in wild mushrooms 0,04 mg/kg until October 18, 2021 and further extended until July 25, 2029.
- Profenofos: The provisional MRL was established under regulation (EU) 2017/978 in wild mushrooms 0,1 mg/kg until October 18, 2021 ,and further extended until July 25, 2029.
- Approval does not require MRL for active ingredient Spodoptera exigua multicapsid nucleopolyhedrovirus (SeMNPV)
