Latest updates on Ethylene Oxide regulations in the EU market
On August 11, 2022, the EU issued regulation number (EU)2022/1396 amending the MRL regulation of Ethylene oxide (EO) in food additives.
According to regulation (EU) No 231/2012, EO cannot be used for sterilization purposes in food additives. The MRL was established based on a quantification threshold of 0.2 mg/kg. However, recently, the EU alert system (RASFF) has made quite a few announcements regarding the detection of EO in some foods and especially in some food additives. In order to avoid risks and ensure a level of health protection for consumers, the EU has introduced amendments: EO residues (including free EO and 2-chloro-ethanol) in food additives should not be exceeded 0.1 mg/kg.
