According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), by mid-July 2017, Vietnam's shrimp exports to the US market reached US$306.5 million, down 5.3% over the same period in 2016, so the US has dropped to the 4th position among the shrimp import key markets of Vietnam, 1st position currently belongs to Japan.

Mrs. To Tuong Lan - Deputy Secretary-General of VASEP informed that Vietnamese shrimp to the US in the first half of this year tended to go down due to the impact of the US Department of Commerce (DOC) increasing anti-dumping tax in the preliminary decision of the 11th administrative review (POR11). New policies related to the protection of domestic production by President Donald Trump have also partly affected the import activities of US businesses.

In addition, strong competition from India - Vietnam's main competitor in the US market, also partly reduced the value of Vietnamese shrimp exports to the US. Importers forecast that in 2017, India's shrimp exports to the US will exceed 2016 because, in the first 7 months of the year, the volume of Indian shrimp exports to this market increased by 56.4%.

Meanwhile, on the Vietnamese side, many barriers pile up, both in terms of quality, anti-dumping tax... are causing many difficulties for businesses in the US market. However, according to some experts' forecasts, the demand for shrimp consumption in the US market is still growing rapidly, especially from now until the end of the year. Therefore, VASEP expects that Vietnam's shrimp exports to the US in this period are expected to increase compared to the same period last year, although the growth rate is not high.

Mr. Le Van Quang, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Minh Phu Seafood Joint Stock Company, said that in addition to the current difficulties, from 2018, the US and EU will apply regulations that require shrimp importers to comply with regulations. currently issues ASC and BAP certificates, and performs electronic retrieval of these certificates. As for organic shrimp products, from 2018, the US and EU markets also require more certifications of the ecological farming process.

These new requirements are very difficult to fulfill for Vietnam's seafood processing and exporting enterprises, especially with Vietnam's organic shrimp farming such as wild shrimp in some coastal provinces in the Mekong Delta.

According to Mr. Quang, the scale of forest shrimp farming households is usually very small, averaging only 3-5ha/household, the daily production of ecological shrimp is only 5-10kg/household, which is not enough to be certified for each individual. consignments of each farming household, so the origin cannot be traced.

And by Mr. Nguyen Van Phong - Deputy Director of Minh Phu Forest Shrimp Chain Social Joint Stock Company (Bien Nhan hamlet, Vien An Dong commune, Ngoc Hien district, Ca Mau province), shrimp farming is an agricultural production model. for a long time in the coastal areas of Ca Mau. However, due to the inefficient form of extensive farming and lack of proper care and investment, currently, the yield of this model is only 700 kg/ha. Therefore, according to the US traceability requirements, individual farming households will face many difficulties.
