The EU changes the approach to controlling mixed foods imported

The European Union (EU) has just issued a new regulation on changing the approach to controlling mixed foods imported from outside the EU.

EU is Vietnam's largest catfish export market

Following the official announcement from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, this new regulation will take effect from April 21, 2021.

Previously, the EU regulated compound foods containing more than 50% of ingredients from products of animal origin applying the same control as foods of animal origin. Mixed foods containing less than 50% food ingredients of animal origin apply as the regulations for mixed foods of plant origin.

All mixed food products containing animal products such as milk, eggs, meat, seafood,... must be accompanied by a certificate of animal quarantine or a certificate of self-certification by the manufacturer, heat treatment certification is required for dairy products,

Ingredients of animal origin (except gelatin and collagen) used to manufacture a synthetic product must be sourced from a third country with an approved residue control plan for the specific ingredients body.

The EU has introduced a model health certificate for imported synthetic products, implemented since 2012. The current certification requirements for mixed products will continue to apply until April 21, 2021.

Under new EU rules, after April 21, 2021, entry requirements will no longer be based on percentages of ingredients of animal origin but on animal health or the risk to human health for the products themselves.
